Pure Rap

From NWA to Modern Gangsta rap?

How did gangsta rap(if you can call ross and others that) go from pretty socially conscious like NWA, Tupac, Ice T, and Biggie to this glorification and indifference of modern thug rappers. NWA and others of their eras spoke about the challenges in the hood and said something needs to be done. Now people just say it is their and maybe even glorify it by claiming to have shot someone and laugh. I just wanna know how this could happen where our music went wrong.

  1. Most of the people like that of rap and they just hire any guy that can spit and make them sing their trash because Rap got so famous. That is why when you want to listen to mainstream rap you go back to classics like Tupac, Biggie, etc... It's all happening underground now and of course keep listening to the classics. One of the only Emcees that was in the game since 88 and that has always been great is Masta Ace. Alot of respect for Ace, pioneer of Hip Hop!
  2. i call it pop rap i hate this radio stuff now in fact i hate it so much i went back to rock, but still listin to the classics. I still like x-raided to ever heard him? more underground tho
  3. Sadly enough there is a skit on a Eminem album(his second I think) that explains it perfectly. The one where he's talking to a record exec and the guys saying "you know why Dre's album is so successful He's rapping about big screen TVs 40's and blunts your rapping about homosexuals and vicodin" The simple fact is probably 80% of album sales are made by teenagers(mostly girls) and how often do you meet a teen that cares about any sort of social problems that don't directly effect them much less want to here about it in their music.
  4. Modern gangsta rap is only the shell of what it once was. Just look at Hardcore hip-hop. Where it used to be dominated by KRS-One and Wu-Tang to Mobb Deep(who, although skilled, are no comparison to the Clan) and Fiddy. Basically someone or a group of someones will pioneer a new subgenre, put all their heart and soul into it, it may become popular and be adapted by others. If it is, those others may have talent and personality to add to the music but, it isn't required. Also, the music industry tends to ruin whatever music is within its grasp. As an aside to arin7630, most rap sales are actually to young suburban white males.
  5. Because People don't rap like good artists ex. Jadakiss, Fabolous, Wu-Tang Clan, Biggie, NWA, and even older guys like the SUGARHILL Gang
