Rap music??
I can understand why hip-hop is considered music... But why rap? The rappers don't really sing or...well, make any attempt to alter their lyrics from normal speech at all! And then in the background theres usually just a monotonous beat, lucky if its even a 4-beat sequence. Theres usually no instrumentals... So why is this stuff considered music? Its more like...talking to a beat... Well, for the two people who provided the classical music example, thats not really my point. I'm not saying anything without proper vocals isn't music, I'm saying anything so uncomplex isn't really music. Classical music is probably one of the most complex types! I'm sure there are rappers out there who have real poetic voices and actually sound good...but unfortunately I haven't heard them :(. All I hear is this "gangsta" crap and the "shake yo booty" crap. And the musical value is really laughable when you consider that the beat is 2 or 3 or God forbid 4 notes repeated continously throughout the song. Music uses a ton of repetition, but thats just stupid. Also, the rappers voices don't seem to stay in key at all. So it really just looks like to me they pluck random guys off the street and putt hem in a recording studio. O_o

- It's an abomination.
- Its more poetry put to music, because the words rhyme and the line to each verse are relatively the same length which depends on the beat. Also you don't have to sing to make music, consider classical music its only a piano and it is still considered music. Rap is also fast paced and they do have melodious sound to it because they are not just saying words.
- you dont have to sing for it to be considered music. look at classical and even some jazz. its just a form of music and thats how they choose to express themselves.
- one answer for that is listen to Wu-Tang Clan. RZA beats are not like these other beats out there. this guy can write, and compose his own muisc.
- beats me I'm surprise it has lasted this long.
- Rap is only talking to a beat. Here's the acronym, R- retards A-attempting P-poetry. Yep, that about sums it up here. As for playing a piano not being music considered an analogy in this situation is laughable. In fact only suggested by the afore mentioned retard. Now if it was michael j. fox playing the piano, the analogy would be correct.
- I understand your point, and distaste for the genre. However, you must consider the fact that "music" originated from vocals only. There were no instruments. Music was so primary that you could define what era a song came from by whether or not multiple notes were used in the same word or not. Gregorian chants are just an example. It doesn't take much to qualify as music. Instrumentals are also considered music. So to qualify as music, a "song" does not require words AND instruments, or talent for that matter.
- believe it or not there are REAL producers out there that use instruments. like let's take the late j dilla for example. he was all about musicianship. much like spoken word (think of gil scott heron or the last poets), rap/hip hop is a form of expression that doesn't require singing. i can agree with some of what you're saying because as a musician myself i feel like rap music is dying with songs like "laffy taffy" getting air play. there's no substance, but if you were to explore underground acts and sleeper acts like people under the stairs or slum village, i think you'd appreciate it more. have a good one!
- i luv rap music its understandable if really listen to it and look at the lyrics rap is like poetry but in a faster way!! music dosent allways have to sound good with the voice the importent things to me is the words to the song and what the songs is trying to say....
- For those that keep saying its poetry... go read a freaking poetry book and dont make us hafta listen to it with your windows down and on top notch in volume.
